6 Insider Tips for Emerging Music Artists
How to Break Through in the Competitive Music Industry
The current state of the music industry can be challenging and competitive, but with the right mindset, skills, and strategies, it is possible to make a name for yourself as an emerging music artist. From my experience as an artist manager, I can tell you that being a successful music artist doesn’t just fall on your feet overnight, it takes time and true dedication to your craft and the connection you create with your listeners/fans which in turn ensures that your music pays your bills and caters for your daily needs. For this week’s tip, I will share some insider tips and insights to help you achieve success in your music career.
Last week, I wrote about how having a strong brand as an emerging artist can help boost your music faster than you can imagine. It is not just about the sound, but also the image and message that you project. It is important to develop a brand that reflects your music and personality. This includes choosing the right name, genre, logo or any visual identity, or hobbies. or whether you are a foodie. If you love soccer, your favourite football club and your unique style. A strong brand will help you stand out from the crowd and attract fans who resonate with your music and image.
Invest in Your Craft
My mom would occasionally tell me stories of how I would set up a mini drumset with kitchen utensils, and break up chinas too because I loved drumming so much, and I as grew older I switched to other skills, developing each one individually, which now adds to the bank of experience I have. To succeed as a music artist, you need to have not just the talent but also the right skill for your craft. This means investing time, effort, and resources in developing your musical skills, whether it’s singing, playing an instrument, songwriting, or producing, whatever helps increase your chances and takes you a step higher on the learning/success ladder. Take classes, if you can, practice regularly, collaborate with other musicians, and seek feedback from professionals to improve your skills and hone your craft.
Network and Collaborate
The music industry is all about connections, so it's essential to build relationships with other musicians, producers, agents, and industry professionals. Attend music events, join online music communities, and connect with fellow musicians on social media. Collaborate with other artists to expand your fan base and reach new audiences. These collaborations can lead to opportunities for gigs, record deals, and further career advancements.
Embrace Digital Marketing
In today's digital age, social media and online platforms are crucial for music promotion and exposure. Use social media channels like Tiktok, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to share your music, connect with fans, and build your brand. Build a website or blog to showcase your music and keep fans updated on your latest projects. Embrace digital marketing techniques like search engine optimization (SEO), email marketing, and paid advertising to boost your visibility and reach.
Focus on Quality Content
While marketing and branding are essential for your music career, your music should always come first. Focus on creating high-quality music that resonates with your fans and showcases your talent and uniqueness. Invest in quality production, mixing, and mastering to ensure that your music sounds great and stands out from the competition. That’s the only way you’ll make people see you as the only you. Release music consistently and build a loyal fan base that appreciates your artistry and supports your career.
Be Persistent and Resilient
The music industry can be tough, I won’t lie, and as I said before, success does not happen overnight. It takes persistence, resilience, and a strong work ethic to make it in this industry. Keep working hard, stay true to your vision, and don't let rejection or setbacks discourage you. Stay focused on your goals, and keep pushing forward, even when things get tough.
To sum it all up, the industry is currently in a hyper and it’s getting more competitive than ever, but with the right mindset, skills, and strategies, you can achieve success as an emerging music artist. Build a strong brand, invest in your craft, network and collaborate, embrace digital marketing, focus on quality content, and be persistent and resilient. Follow these tips, stay true to yourself, and keep working hard to make your mark in the music industry. Peace!
